AwardBest of the best and Best 4 steam

Part of the UK based Mayborn Group Limited, tommee tippee®is the number one baby feeding accessories brand in the UK, and one of the top brands of infant products and accessories in the global market. Developed in conjunction with breastfeeding experts, the tommee tippee® Closer to Nature® range offers a wide range of products designed to make life easier for parents and their little one - including newborn feeding, weaning, soothing and baby monitoring products. For over 50 years’ tommee tippee® have developed products and provided advice to support breastfeeding and bottlefeeding.
The tommee tippee Closer to Nature Electric Steam Steriliser is really easy to use: press the on switch; it glows orange when during sterilisation and goes off 5 minutes later when the cycle is finished. Leave 3 minutes to cool down and your feeding equipment is ready to use. Parent Testers liked the fact that the sterilister was big enough for all their feeding equipment, however it did take up space in the kitchen as it can't be stored out of sight in the microwave. However this steriliser is very efficient and easy to use, giving parent’s peace of mind that all their equipment is sterilised. In fact our Parent Testers were so impressed with this top scoring steriliser that we have awarded it not just one but two awards: Best 4 steam and Best of the best!

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • I liked the fact that the steps on how to us it were on the box (1,2,3).  Demonstrates how simple it is to use.
  • Easy to clean, just pour away the water from the base and need to descale the steriliser every month as recommended.
  • I feel that it is easier to use than my previous unit as the bottles sit nicely even though they are not Tommee Tippee bottles and I know, by the light, when the bottles are done.
  • Found it easy and quick to use - a mother’s best friend I would say.

Mothercare is a global retailer with over 1,129 stores in 62 countries. Based on this experience and on their research Mothercare aims to provide a wide range of products with a clever mix of strong design and high quality - all at great value for money prices. Customers can shop online or enjoy a visit to their local (long established) high street stores where they can see and touch products in a parent and child-friendly environment. Customers can chat with Mothercare sales advisors who are trained to provide expert advice on product choice from pregnancy to eight year olds.
Mothercare sell branded as well as own-brand products including their new range of Innosense sterilsers. We have tested the electric and cold water sterilisers, each with their own distinct design features. The Innosense Electric Steam Steriliser fits on top of work spaces in the kitchen, can be stacked for easy storage and sterilises up to 6 bottles, or a breast pump plus accessories, or weaning equipment. Parent Testers found this steriliser easy to set-up, use and clean. They especially liked the stackable containers (to separate feeding items easily) and the innovative three-colour light system (so you know whether the steriliser is sterilising, cooling or cycle is complete). Although this steriliser is quite expensive our Parent Testers still felt it provided value for money. We are therefore delighted to reward Mothercare on a clever new product by giving it a TIPS Best 4 steam award.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • I set it up without using the instructions but the assembly diagram in the leaflet is very clear.
  • As the feeding equipment fitted in easily in any position I could pretty much throw them in when needed
  • The shape of the containers makes it easy to get into the corners for cleaning, and the fact that you can just use part of it means you only need to clean what you use. Helpful that a brush is included.
  • The stackable feature- looks so neat and tidy and you can change the size of compartments so you don’t have to use all of it if not needed. I also loved the different colored lights which show you what mode it’s in are brilliant- there’s no confusion with this steriliser

RRP: £24.99

AwardBest 4 microwave and Best 4 cold water

Milton has been used in hospitals and at home for over 65 years and has a fascinating history.
During the late 1940's a widespread outbreak of gastroenteritis led to the death of 4,500 babies under the age of 1 year. The outbreak was traced back to poorly cleaned baby feeding equipment. At that time, the only way to sterilise bottles was to boil them for a few minutes in a saucepan. The Ministry of Health asked the manufacturers of Milton to develop a safe and easy way to sterilise baby equipment. It was then that the Milton Method (also known as 'cold water Method') was born and it has been credited with saving many babies' lives over the years. The Milton Method is still widely recognised by hospitals as a superior sterilisation method to boiling and it is supported by extensive clinical research and data. In recent years Milton has introduced the Milton Combi Microwave or Cold Water Steriliser and the Mini Portable Soother Steriliser for trips out and about.
The new Milton Combi Steriliser can be used for cold water and microwave sterilising. The 5 litre unit holds up to 5 bottles, and can also be used for breast pump equipment. Testers could choose microwave or cold water sterilisation depending on whether they were at home or on holiday. Once sterilised items remain sterile for up to 24 hours. Overall this product proved very popular with Testers, not just for its ease of use but also for its versatility. In fact we have decided to award this steriliser with not one but two awards: Best 4 microwave and Best 4 cold water!

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • I was very excited to see this could be used at home and away from home
  • I have already decided to use this steriliser instead of the electric one i own.
  • It's Cheaper to run as no electric needed, easy to clean, only 2 parts, and it keeps the bottles sterilised for 24 hours instead of 6.
  • so much easier to only change solution every 24 hours rather than getting up to open microwave door when finished as my microwave continually beeps until door opened - very annoying!

For over 50 years’ tommee tippee® have developed products and provided advice to support breastfeeding and bottlefeeding.
The tommee tippee Closer to Nature Microwave Steriliser is really easy to use. It holds up to 4 bottles, and all the accessories that can fit into the compact unit. Parent Testers commented that other brands of bottle did not fit as well in the steriliser, but this is designed for tommee tippee products. Items will remain sterile for up to 24 hours if you keep the lid closed. So you can switch on at bedtime and in the morning all your equipment is ready to use. Parent Testers particularly liked the fast sterilising cycle and the fact that you can keep the steriliser in the microwave - saving kitchen worktop space. It was also compact enough to take on holiday so no need to buy a separate steriliser. The price was considered reasonable too so we are delighted to award this steriliser a Best 4 microwave award!

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • I would recommend if tommy tippee bottles are bought as it is the right size and shape
  • Very easy to set up - there are photos on the back of the box showing you what to do with an additional leaflet inside the box.
  • I like it’s ease of use, how much it can accommodate and speed for sterilising
  • Found it very easy to clean, no corners for grime to lurk in.

Medela Quick Clean Microwave Bags

Easy to use: disinfect in just 3 easy steps.
Space saving: small and easy to store.

RRP: £12.49 for 5 bags (20 uses per bag)

Award: Clever idea

Founded in 1961 by Olle Larsson in Zug, Switzerland, Medela continues to grow under the ownership of the Larsson family. Medela breast pumps and breastfeeding accessories are used by nursing mothers around the world. A long-time champion of breastfeeding, Medela is the only company to develop products based on research by the world's leading lactation experts.
Medela has developed an extensive line of products to meet the diverse needs of nursing mothers. These products include:
• breast pumps: hospital-grade; electric (single and double); manual
• breastfeeding accessories: cleaning products; breast care products; specialty feeding devices
• maternity and nursing bras and support belts (available in some countries only).
This innovative quick clean microwave bag is designed to sterilise breast pump accessories quickly and efficiently. The bag should be filled with drinking water from the tap. Testers agreed that this product is better for holiday rather everyday use. Some Testers found the bag tricky to open when still hot, so care needs to be taken to avoid scalding hands. Nonetheless this is an incredibly simple new way to sterilise on the move so for this reason we are delighted to award the Medela Quick Clean Microwave bag a Clever idea award.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • Easy. Clear instructions told us how long to microwave, amount of water etc. Took on holiday so saved lots of space.
  • I loved how quick and easy it was to use and how compact it was
  • I would like to buy a single bag for on the go and at parents etc
  • Space is always at a premium when travelling and the bags can be folded or laid flat in a bag instead of travelling with a bulky steriliser unit.

With the new Milton Solo Travel Steriliser you can sterilise breast pump accessories or 1 bottle using either the microwave or cold water sterilising method. Testers liked the flexibility this gave them when they didn't have access to a microwave. Ideal for travelling or away from home overnight the Milton Solo Travel Steriliser is light and portable. Its unique safety vent technology allows the steriliser to heat to a very high temperature. The steriliser can be used on its side if it's too tall for the microwave - some Testers were not aware of this. Although not all sizes of bottle fit into this steriliser it is nonetheless very handy for trips away from home. We are delighted to award this innovative addition to the trusted Milton range with Best 4 travel TIPS Award.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • Great to have a less bulky steriliser to pack for holiday or visiting people
  • Yes, it’s very handy when you don't have a microwave nearby.
  • Allows product to be more versatile depending on where a person is travelling to.
  • It's just a case of adding a quarter sterilising tablet and water (or water and microwaving).

The Milton Method is still widely recognised by hospitals as a superior sterilisation method to boiling and it is supported by extensive clinical research and data. 90 years of extensive use have demonstrated that the Milton Method is not just easy and convenient, it is also highly effective and reliable.
The new Milton Mini Portable Soother Steriliser is designed for sterilising soothers. It can be used at home but is especially useful when out and about. Most soothers will fit in this 100% watertight and BPA free steriliser. The Milton Mini Portable Soother Steriliser comes in 3 colours with a handy adjustable strap that can easily be attached to a buggy or kept in a changing bag. It’s easy to use: simply pop a Milton mini tablet in the pod, add water up to the fill line and wait for the tablet to dissolve. Once dissolved add the sponges - the one with the hole in goes on top. Place the dummy in the sponges, give a quick twist and screw the lid back on. Wait 15 minutes and the dummy is sterilised. The solution is effective for 24 hours so you only need to make it up once during the day. Testers thought this was a great idea, as soothers invariably end up being dropped when out and about. They said it was easy to use and they had peace of mind knowing they always had a spare sterilised soother ready to use. We are therefore delighted to award this new product a TIPS Clever idea.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • Easy, tried it at home first before going out. I was worried water might spill but it didn't
  • Very easy I thought - liked the small handle on the top so you can attach it to things
  • I loved the little strap and the cute ball shape
  • I have no way of sterilising outside the home so this is such a fabulous travel idea

Customers can chat with Mothercare sales advisors who are trained to provide expert advice on product choice from pregnancy to eight year olds.
Mothercare sell branded as well as own-brand products, including their new range of Innosense sterilisers. We have tested the electric and cold water sterilisers, each with their own distinct design features. The Innosense Cold Water Steriliser unique bottle nets have been designed to ensure individual bottle parts stay together when sterilising. Larger items such as breast pump, accessories and weaning equipment can be placed directly in the bucket. The flexible plunger ensures items remain submersed in the sterile solution, and numbers on the plunger aid bottle rotation. Parent Testers liked the innovative features that Mothercare have introduced to this new range. Although useful, the net bags were not suitable for some bottle shapes. Parent Testers also agreed that this steriliser is excellent value for money (especially when bottlefeeding) as it lets you sterilise all your feeding equipment. So we are delighted to award this new product a TIPS Clever idea award.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • The bags were good to keep everything separate. Also if you sterilise according to the rules i.e fresh bottle each feed then this is the best system to use, even above a steam steriliser as it is ready to go all day.
  • The unit is easier to clean than the steam sterliser we own, and the lock-safe lid was also brilliant, as I was a bit worried I'd knock the solution everywhere by mistake. The hand grip on the base was great too.
  • I like the convenience of cold water sterilising and this model is good for keeping parts eg all breast pump parts together using the innovative net bags and rack system.

How the TIPS Award Scheme works

Only products that comply with our strict criteria can be submitted for a TIPS trial – this is part of our robust selection process explained in the ‘Methodology and criteria’ section below. This means that any product accepted to go through to the testing programme is already a winner.

When selected for a trial, volunteer Parent Testers receive products to test and are asked to provide their comments using a detailed questionnaire. Testers’ feedback is collated, evaluated and reviewed by Sharon Trotter.

On completion of the judging process, awards are confirmed and the results are published on the TIPS website.

I would also like to say a special thank you to our team of dedicated parent testers whose comments and detailed feedback allow the TIPS testing programme to achieve a level of independence and impartiality that is second to none.

Please note that products tested by TIPS are not free or promotional products, but samples for the sole purpose of independent testing.  Only Testers who have agreed and signed a copy of the TIPS Award Scheme terms and conditions can take part in a TIPS trial.

About this trial

As a passionate supporter of breastfeeding, I had planned to trial breast pumps (still planned for a future TIPS trial) but one of our suppliers suggested we trial sterilisers first, so this is what we decided to do. Whether you are breastfeeding or bottle feeding you will need to sterilise any feeding equipment before use.

  • 8 products were carefully selected for this trial. 80 test samples, supplied by 4 manufacturers were sent to 48 Parent Tester (the age range of baby and toddler testers was birth to 55 months of age.
  • Testers completed and returned 79 of 80 detailed questionnaires; this is a return rate of over 98%

Methodology and criteria

Every steriliser included in this trial is made from plastic that is BPA free and designed to the highest safety standards.
When selecting sterilisers for this trial my aim was to include products that:

  • keep all your feeding equipment super clean
  • are easy to use
  • can be used in a variety of ways (steam, microwave, cold water technique and electric)
  • can be used at home or while out and about.

Guidelines for Testers (this was provided to all Testers who took part)

About sterilisation
Please read the following information before you start testing each steriliser.

As a passionate advocate of breastfeeding, I am keen to dissuade parents from using bottles, teats, spouts and lidded cups for at least the first six months of life.
Breastfeeding is the safest way to feed a baby. We also know that exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life not only provides the best nutrition for a baby but also conveys physical and emotional benefits that will last a lifetime. Breastfeeding will also help to boost baby’s immune system so they are better able to resist infections. However, even if she is breastfeeding, a new mum may need to use a breast pump or choose to give her baby a soother. These products must be sterilised before use until baby is 12 months old.

Why sterilise feeding products?
Babies may become ill if feeding products are not sterilised properly. During the first year of life a baby’s immune system is immature. Extra precautions need to be taken to make sure that feeding items do not pose a risk of infection. Feeding items include breast pumps, bottles, teats, containers for breast milk storage, cups, spoons and soothers. Unless great care is taken to clean and sterilise these items, babies may suffer from conditions like gastroenteritis or thrush. This is especially important for premature babies and bottle fed babies.

Most parents understand the importance of sterilising feeding equipment in the early months of life. However, there are also possible risks when baby starts to use cups. A US survey found that infant lidded cups tested at laboratories, were teeming with bacterial growth. This is something every parent should be aware of.

Common causes of gastroenteritis in babies:

  • Rotavirus - an air borne virus passed on from person to person. Rotavirus accounts for the majority of hospital admissions with diarrhoea in the under 5's.
  • Campylobacter - the most common type of food poisoning, often contracted from cats and dogs.
  • Salmonella - often caused by undercooked foods.
  • E Coli - from raw meat and often passed on from not washing hands after the toilet.
  • Listeria - caught from poor hand washing.

What materials are used to manufacture feeding products?
What are breast pumps, bottles, teats, containers for breast milk storage cups and sterilisers made from? Are they safe?

A few years ago most commercially available feeding products were made from polycarbonate and contain a chemical softener called Bisphenol-A. When heated this chemical can migrate from a container into the contents, causing potentially dangerous contamination. This is more likely to happen when containers are old or scratched. The levels of Bisphenol-A found under test conditions are very small. However babies’ immature systems are more sensitive to chemicals, and there is no safe contamination level. It is best to make sure that baby is not exposed to Bisphenol-A at all. Any container that has been unused for some time should be rinsed thoroughly with plain water. This will help remove any residues.

Here are our top tips to avoid contamination of feeding equipment:

  • Always wash your hands before and after preparing feeds for your baby.
  • Clean all feeding items thoroughly with soapy water and rinse them in cold water before sterilising.
  • Clean teats by rubbing with salt to remove all traces of milk.
  • When using a sterilising solution make sure there are no air bubbles trapped in the bottles or teats
  • When sterilising by boiling put glass bottles in a pan of water and boil for at least 10 minutes.
  • Sterilise all feeding equipment for the first 12 months of life.
  • Breast pumps should be sterilised on first use. After this, sterilise once a week. In between times you can hand wash and rinse before putting in the dishwasher – see the information provided with your breast pump.
  • Never share breast pumps or breast pump parts with other mothers.

For excellent advice on expressing and storing breastmilk go to the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers website (abm.me.uk) and look for 'Expressing Breast Milk' in the 'Breastfeeding Information' section.

How to test

  • Use the steriliser at least 7 times before completing your questionnaire.
  • Make sure you follow the instructions provided with the steriliser.
  • Complete the questionnaire

There are five sections in the questionnaire:

  • About you: here we ask about your Little One and about your feeding experiences.
  • About the product: in this section, we ask about the packaging, design and information provided with the steriliser.
  • Using the product: this includes questions about ease of set-up, ease of use and ability to use while out an about.
  • Feedback: in this section, we ask you to comment on your favourite features, suggest improvements, and tell us whether you believe the product provides good value.
  • Awards: in this section, you can suggest an award for the steriliser you have tested.

Conclusion and references:

As you can see, there are many aspects of design to assess when testing this product. An award winning steriliser must be manufactured using BPA free plastic, be easy to set-up, easy to use and easy to clean. This can only be achieved when manufacturers use top quality materials and pay close attention to detail when designing their products.
Thank you again for all your hard work. You can be sure that your independent testing and comments will help to give parents the best and most unbiased advice available.
Kindest regards
