Weleda Baby Calendula weather protection Cream

RRP: £7.95 for 30mls
Price per ml: 30p
Supplied and manufactured by
(Tested October – December 2009 as a baby lotion)

This unique cream is not exactly a lotion or a nappy balm so it was difficult to know which category of products it should be tested with. In the end, we decided to test it with baby lotions. This is because Weleda Baby Calendula Weather Protection Cream provides a skin-friendly barrier protection which is especially useful in the winter months when chapped lips and wind-swept faces are all too common.
The 100% natural formulation is based on sweet almond oil, hypoallergenic lanolin and beeswax, with the trademark scent of calendula flower. This product is obviously useful for chapped hands and lips, but Testers found many other uses for this innovative rescue remedy, including sore noses and weather damaged cheeks. Parents d suggested this would be great for winter trips and outdoor activities. In fact so handy was this product that Testers voted it a ‘Must-have’ award.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • This little tube was full of magic – what a lovely product!

  • It sinks into your skin beautifully leaving you feeling like there is a barrier but without looking greasy or shiny

  • Value for money as a tiny amount goes a long way

Shea Mooti Mama's Everything Body Balm

RRP: £16.99 for 120mls
Price per gm: 14.1p
Supplied and manufactured by
(Tested February 2012 as a nappy cream)

The name "Shea Mooti" came about because Violet used ethically-sourced Shea Butter from AfriKids’ Daughters, a multi-cooperative in northern Ghana, to create her initial range of products. ‘Mooti’ comes from ‘Muti’ meaning ‘tree’ in Shona – the language of Violet's native Zimbabwe.

The Shea Mooti range includes a gorgeous hand-made soap (we tested this as a baby wash, and you can read the reviews in the TIPS Awards section of this website), the Mama’s Belly Rub Stretch Mark Oil (we tested this as a belly balm, and you can read the reviews in the TIPS Awards section of this website) and Mama’s soothing Leg and Foot cream.

Testers agreed that Mama’s Everything Body Balm not only lived up to expectations but exceeded them. This silky balm smelled beautiful and left skin feeling soft and nourished. Our Testers found tt calmed itchy hands, moisturised stretch marks, pampered lips and soothed nappy rash. We are sure you will find other uses so go on give it a try!
In fact we were so impressed we decided it is a Must have for your bathroom or baby bag!

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • I was surprised it didn’t react with my son’s eczema and I even rubbed it on his sore legs, providing him with relief from itching.

  • Very cost-effective as it does so many jobs

  • A pleasure to test and I will definitely continue to use it, and buy more, when my tub runs out!

Award: Best eco-friendly

B Organic Soothing body balm

RRP: £13 for 60mls
Price per ml: 21.6p

Also available in unscented
Supplied and manufactured by
(Tested April 2011 as a nappy cream)

B Organic Skincare is the brainchild of Aycin who started off by creating products to help calm her daughter’s severe eczema. The range has evolved to include products for babies (not newborns), toddlers, mums-to-be and all women, but there is no reason why men should not also enjoy them.

B Organic Skincare Soothing Body Balm is made in the UK using 100 per cent certified organic ingredients. Testers absolutely loved the scent describing it as ‘divine’ and ‘yummy’. The texture of the product is slightly grainy at first but it melts beautifully into the skin, and a little goes a long way. We tested B Organic Skincare Soothing Body Balm as a nappy cream but this multi-purpose product can also be used for sensitive skin and dermatitis. It is also very effective at calming sore bottoms.
B Organic Skincare sources certified organic ingredients with great care. Most of these are plant-based raw materials. This company have first class green credentials and use recyclable packaging for their whole range.
As this balm was tested independently of the main nappy creams trial we cannot give it a ‘Best’ award. However, in recognition of its overall high score and positive feedback from Testers, we are delighted to award B Organic Skincare Soothing Body Balm an ‘Editor’s choice’ TIPS award.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • It was very effective at clearing up a few dry patches on my baby’s skin within only one or two applications.

  • Sometimes more expensive products do not live up to the hype but this one was fabulous.

  • Initially I did not like the texture but when ‘warmed’ and rubbed in I loved it!

MamaStella Baby Stella's Butter

Available in four varieties: Bare Natural (no essential oils), Sweet Orange, Lavender Dream and Patchouli & Lime

RRP: £10 for 200mls
Price per ml: 5p
Supplied and manufactured by

Available from Mama Stella's ebay shop
(Tested March 2014 as a belly balm)

Following the birth of her first born in 2011, Mama Stella’s founder struggled to find an affordable and completely natural product to use on her baby. So she went back to basics, searched her pantry and started mixing oils and butters in her kitchen. Her goal was to produce a product that was 100% natural. The result was Baby Stella’s Butter which quickly became popular with friends and family. What started out as a recipe for young skin soon found equal popularity with adults who appreciated the products high-quality ingredients, but at a refreshingly reasonable price. Mama Stella uses carefully-sourced, raw, unrefined grade A shea butter which is known to possess an extensive list of benefits for all skin types. This is complemented by premium plant oils and pure essential oils carefully balanced to maximise the nutrients and vitamins in her butter. The product is also made in the UK, which reduces its carbon footprint and the packaging is recyclable making it eco-friendly too.

Parent Testers enjoyed the way this butter melted in their hands allowing easy application. All agreed that it lasted for ages and so is very cost-effective. Baby Stella’s Butter fits perfectly into our ointment category because it helps to soothe cuts and grazes, is ideal for moisturising all areas of the body and doubles up as a nappy cream. We also tested this as a belly balm (link to other review) this is yet an additional handy use for this versatile product.
In fact our Parent Testers were so impressed we have decided to award Baby Stella’s Butter a Must-have TIPS Award in the Ointment and Belly balm categories.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • It was a nice texture and melted easily to enable me to spread the butter.

  • It was very soothing on dry, chapped hands and seemed to soothe my baby when he had nappy rash. It also healed a cracked lip quickly.

  • I also used it on my fingers as a cuticle cream, which worked well.

  • I do not currently use cream as my baby is sensitive to it, but would consider using this as it did not react with her skin.

Essential Care Organic Soothing Salve

RRP: £17.00 for 175gms
Price per gm: 9.71p
Supplied and manufactured by
(Tested October – December 2009 as a nappy cream)

Made with 100% certified organic ingredients including fair trade shea butter, this nappy cream is handmade in small batches in Suffolk. Testers liked the graphics that will soon be launched. They particularly liked the size and shape of the container which made dispensing easy. Essential Care’s founder Margaret Weeds has been creating skincare products for 30 years (originally as a remedy for the family’s eczema). Margaret is still responsible for Essential Care’s unique product formulations and she takes great care to use only the highest quality, organic, pure, and ethically-sourced raw ingredients. This attention to detail is reflected in the quality of the information they provide online and on pack. This gorgeous nappy salve cleared up nappy rash overnight. Testers also found it was ideal for dry skin and cradle cap.
There are few truly organic products. The quality of the ingredients makes this product an obvious choice for people who care about the environment, or for anyone with sensitive skin. I am delighted to give Essential Care Organic Soothing Salve a TIPS Best Organic award.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • The new packaging looks great, it’s clear, simple and honest

  • You can tell it is made with love and passion using only natural ingredients

  • It DOES work so it is cost effective!

Organic Babies Nappy Cream Baby Balm

RRP: £9.95 for 40mls
Price per gm: 25p
Supplied and manufactured by

(Tested October - December 2009 as a nappy cream)

With 11 TIPS Awards under their belt, the Organic Babies and Organic Children ranges are already a firm favourite with our Parent Testers. With excellent organic formulations and eco-friendly credentials, all products are ideal for any skin type and many are suitable for vegans. In fact, Organic Babies and Organic Children products are perfect for all babies, big and small!
For this trial 10 Parent Testers used Organic Babies Nappy Cream Baby Balm as an ointment with babies and children (age range from 6 months to 7 years). This product is rich in organic calendula and zinc oxide, which have natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Not only can this product be used as an ointment to help soothe cuts and grazes, but it also doubles up as a nappy cream.
Parent Testers who reviewed Organic Babies Nappy Cream Baby Balm were unanimous in their praise for this high quality product and agreed it had lived up to their expectations. It was easy to dispense, a little went a long way and it quickly helped to reduce itching and redness - even on the most sensitive of skin types. Although this is one of the more expensive ointments our Parent Testers reviewed, most agreed the quality of the product justified the extra cost especially as it can be used in so many ways. One of participants in this trial has two girls who suffer from dry skin conditions and she told us Organic Babies Nappy Cream Baby Balm was ideal for their delicate skin.
This product has already been awarded a Best Organic TIPS award as a nappy cream but due to its versatility we are delighted to award it a Must-have TIPS Award as an ointment too.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • Easy to hold and just the right size - being in a tub means you get to use all of the product as tubes sometimes mean that some is left
  • I would buy this instead of my usual brand because it was more effective at reducing redness and itching on both my girls skin
  • It worked really well on my son's sensitive skin and was great at reducing redness
  • It soothed and protected my toddler overnight. It also helped with thrush after antibiotic treatment

Aromababy Barrier Balm

RRP: £17 for 100gms
Price per gm: 17p
Supplied and manufactured by
(Tested October – December 2009 as a nappy cream)

Testers just loved this product. Aromababy Barrier Balm contains a base of pure cold pressed sweet almond oil and natural beeswax combined with a blend of calendula, evening primrose and gmo free natural vitamin E oils plus pure essential oil of German chamomile. It appeared to cure redness or sore bottoms with a few applications. The balm scored less because it is imported from Australia - this increases its carbon footprint for UK customers. Testers enjoyed the way it melted in their fingers making it easy to apply. All agreed that the product really does last a long time.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • Very effective, it calmed and soothed nappy rash overnight

  • Brilliantly effective as a salve or a healing balm on sore or rough skin

  • A luxury product which lasts for ages

Allison England Aromatherapy Soothy Cream

Testers appreciated the fact that Allison England Aromatherapy Soothy Cream doesn’t contain any artificial ingredients and were impressed by how easy it was to apply.

This is what some of the Testers said:

JĀSÖN Extra Strength Vitamin E Oil 32000iu

Also available in other strengths (5000iu, 14000iu and 45000iu)
RRP: £8.99 for 30mls
Price per ml: 30p
Supplied and manufactured by
(Tested March - April 2014 as a belly balm)

Founded in California in 1959, JĀSÖN create beauty and personal care products for the whole family. They want to produce everyday wholesome products that really work at a price that everyone can afford. JĀSÖN means 'healer' in Greek. This is reflected in the therapeutic blends JĀSÖN use in their formulas, all crafted according to their Code of Honour:
• select safe, wholesome, natural ingredients
• rigorously test every formula to ensure safety and efficacy
• never test on animals
• constantly innovate and improve
We have already tested the JĀSÖN Earth’s Best nappy cream, baby lotion, shampoo and body wash. So when JĀSÖN asked that we trial their extra strength Vitamin E Oil we were initially unsure what category this product should come under. Having considered the different uses for this product, we tested as a belly balm, (antenatal and postnatally) and as an ointment. Testers' reviews allowed us to assess the effectiveness of this product at reducing the impact of stretch marks, softening the area around section scars, making scars less visible, or helping to treat dry skin conditions.
Parent Testers said the JĀSÖN Extra Strength Vitamin E Oil was thicker than other oils and quite sticky. However they thought the applicator was really useful. Participants came up with a surprising range of uses for this innovative wee pot of oil (this may be because it is high in antioxidants). Our Parent testers used the JĀSÖN Extra Strength Vitamin E Oil on their pregnant bump, previous stretch marks, section scars, burns, and even as a night face cream. Although the reviews didn't describe a marked reduction in the appearance of scars or stretch marks, participants agreed their skin felt appreciably softer. It should also be noted that the product proved especially good at treating a chronic case of facial dermatitis.
Our Parent Testers used JĀSÖN Extra Strength Vitamin E Oil for at least two weeks before completing their questionnaires. We asked pregnant participants to use the product just on one side of their tummy to allow them to better see the effect of the product on their skin.
JĀSÖN Extra Strength Vitamin E Oil is a great all-rounder and it worked just as well as a belly balm (antenatally and postnatally) and it did as an ointment (link to other review). It really can be used as an effective face cream for stubborn skin conditions. It could have scored more highly if it had not been formulated with the synthetic version of Vitamin E. However, due to the positive results of this trial we are delighted to award JĀSÖN Extra Strength Vitamin E Oil a Highly commended TIPS Award in the Belly balm and Ointment categories.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • It is more cost effective than my usual brand because you only need a small amount so it lasts longer

  • I have very dry skin on hands, elbows and knees and this oil has certainly improved moisture in these areas

  • I would use it as well as my normal moisturiser sometimes, as a nice treat after a bath or something. Like a little bit of pampering.

  • I would use this oil alongside my usual belly oil for pregnancy, but I have switched my facial night oil to be JĀSÖN instead of my normal brand.

Award:  Highly commended
